
House Orientation: The Free Upgrade Most Queensland Homes Skip
How north-facing living, eave depth and cross-ventilation decide whether a Queensland house is comfortable — and why orientation costs nothing at design stage.
The cheapest decision in the whole project
Orientation is the only significant performance upgrade in a house that costs nothing. Rotating a floor plan and repositioning windows at the drawing stage is a change of lines on paper.
Get it right and the house is comfortable most of the year with the air conditioner off. Get it wrong and you pay for cooling every summer for as long as the building stands, and no amount of glazing specification fully recovers it.
It is also the decision most commonly surrendered, because a standard plan gets placed on a block in whatever way suits the driveway rather than the sun.
Why north matters in Queensland
In the southern hemisphere the sun tracks through the northern sky. In summer it is high overhead; in winter it sits lower and further north.
That difference is what makes north-facing glazing so useful here. A properly sized eave above a north window blocks the high summer sun almost entirely while still letting the lower winter sun in. The same overhang does two opposite jobs across the year without any moving parts.
This is why living areas belong on the north side. It is the only aspect where sun can be controlled with a fixed overhang.
West is the problem
Western glazing is the single worst thermal decision available in a Queensland house. Afternoon summer sun comes in low from the west, at the hottest part of the day, at an angle no eave can block.
The consequences are immediate. A west-facing living room with large glazing will be uncomfortable from mid-afternoon through evening in summer, exactly when the family is using it.
The fixes, in order of effectiveness: do not put major glazing on the west at all; if you must, keep it small; then shade it externally with screens, louvres, a verandah or planting. External shading works because it stops heat before it enters. Internal blinds are far less effective because by then the heat is already inside.
East is less severe but has the same character — morning sun, low angle, hard to shade with an overhang. Bedrooms on the east work well because the warmth arrives when you are getting up and leaves by mid-morning.
Cross-ventilation is half the answer
Queensland's traditional housing worked because air moved through it. High ceilings, openings on opposite walls, and plans one room deep let breeze do the cooling.
Modern plans frequently block this without meaning to. A deep floor plan with openings on only one side, or an internal layout that walls off the path between two sides of the house, has no cross-flow no matter how many windows there are.
The design rules are simple: openings on opposite or adjacent walls in every living space, a clear internal path between them, and openings sized so air can actually move rather than merely enter.
Ceiling fans then extend the range considerably. They cost little to run and make a room feel several degrees cooler, which for much of the Queensland year is the entire requirement.
Meeting the energy standard the cheap way
New homes in Queensland are built to a raised energy performance standard under the National Construction Code. There are two ways to meet it.
The cheap way is design: orient the living areas north, size the eaves properly, avoid or shade western glass, insulate well and plan for cross-ventilation. All of this is decided on paper and adds essentially nothing to the build cost.
The expensive way is compensation: a poorly oriented house that meets the standard through high-performance glazing, additional insulation and mechanical systems. It complies, it costs more to build, and it costs more to run forever.
