Insulation and Ventilation in a Queensland Home: What Actually Matters

Why insulating for heat exclusion differs from insulating for warmth, where to spend first, and why ventilation does more than insulation in a subtropical climate.

A different problem to southern Australia

Most insulation advice in Australia is written for cold-climate performance — keeping heat in during winter. In South East Queensland the dominant problem is the reverse: keeping heat out for eight months of the year, and dealing with humidity.

That changes where the money should go and which products matter. A specification copied from a Melbourne project is not optimised for Brisbane.

It also means ventilation carries more of the load here than it does further south, and in the shoulder seasons it does almost all of it.

The ceiling comes first

Heat load in a Queensland house comes overwhelmingly from above. The roof surface reaches extreme temperatures in summer sun and radiates into the roof space, which then radiates into the rooms below.

Ceiling insulation is therefore the highest-value insulation in the building, and it is also the cheapest to install well and the easiest to upgrade later.

Roof space ventilation works with it. A well-ventilated roof space stays significantly cooler, which reduces the temperature difference the insulation has to work against. Insulation and ventilation are complementary here, not alternatives.

Reflective foil sarking under the roof sheeting adds a further layer by reflecting radiant heat before it enters the roof space at all — particularly effective under metal roofing.

Walls, and which ones

Wall insulation matters, but not equally on every elevation. The western and eastern walls take low-angle sun that eaves cannot block, so they carry the highest load. The southern wall takes the least.

External shading beats insulation on the west. Stopping the sun before it reaches the wall is far more effective than resisting the heat afterwards, which is why screens, louvres, verandahs and planting on the western side earn their cost.

Where steel framing is used, thermal bridging needs addressing with thermal break strips, otherwise the frame conducts heat straight through the insulation layer.

Ventilation and humidity

Cross-ventilation is the traditional Queensland cooling strategy and it still works. Openings on opposite or adjacent walls, a clear internal path between them, and openings large enough for air to actually move.

Ceiling fans then extend the comfortable range considerably at negligible running cost. For a large part of the Queensland year, fans plus cross-ventilation are the entire cooling requirement.

Humidity is the other half of comfort here, and it is why exhaust ventilation matters. Bathroom and kitchen exhausts must discharge outside the building, not into the roof space — venting moist air into a roof cavity is a reliable way to grow mould and degrade insulation.

Subfloor ventilation matters on any suspended-floor house. Poor subfloor airflow produces damp, which attracts termites and rots timber.

Where to spend, in order

Design first — orientation, eave depth and cross-ventilation cost nothing and outperform everything else.

Then ceiling insulation and roof space ventilation, which address the largest heat source. Then reflective sarking under the roof. Then external shading on western and eastern glazing. Then wall insulation. Then glazing performance.

Glazing upgrades are frequently sold as the first move and are usually better value further down this list, because shading unglazed western wall and shading the glass externally both address the problem before it becomes one.
